SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH ATTRIBUTED TO THE LADY WELLINGTON ENGRAVER
Mid-19th Century
Obverse, titled "La Griffon. Bashante.", depicts a battle between the French navy brig Griffon and the H.M.S. Bacchante, the ships engulfed in billowing smoke and showing damage from cannon fire. Reverse, titled "Karpee[?]. And. Agrivation.[ sic]" depicts a schooner and another vessel run aground. The obverse probably illustrates the capture of Griffon off Cuba on May 11, 1808 and the reverse the Royal Navy revenue schooner Gaspee running aground while chasing the packet boat Hannah off Warwick, Rhode Island in 1772. The hulls of all vessels with deep intaglio-style engraving. This, as well as the elegant script lettering, the fine detailing and the delicate geometric and foliate garlands encircling the tip and base, are all hallmarks of the Lady Wellington Engraver's workmanship.
