Hal E. Fielding was born in Provo, Utah in 1928, and received a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University before moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1954. He experimented with various art forms and media through the years while supporting a family as a medical technologist and, later, as a principal in a computer software corporation, writing and marketing programs for businesses. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics from the College of Santa Fe in 1985, and began painting full time in 1991 after he received instruction in the manner of Impressionism, painting pastel landscapes, churches, and church interiors. Recognizing the abstractness in his mainly self-taught technique, his work evolved into non-objective themes using primarily acrylics on canvas, and he traveled to Europe for intensive art training, including Renaissance and Ancient Roman on-site drawing in Rome, Florence, and Venice. After further study in Paris, France in private and workshop settings he began exhibiting in numerous art galleries in New Mexico and summer outdoor art shows with the Santa Fe Society of Artists and the Santa Fe Artists League, eventually gaining national acclaim for his late-blooming style and his contributions to the second wave of the Taos Abstract Movement. He passed away peacefully at his home the night of November 5th, 2013.
