An elegant Spode porcelain footed centerpiece bowl decorated in the celebrated "Italian" pattern, one of the firm's most iconic and enduring transferware designs. Executed in finely detailed black transfer printing on a white porcelain ground, the bowl depicts the romanticized Italian landscape introduced by Spode in 1816, featuring classical ruins, a stone bridge, pastoral figures, livestock, trees, and distant castles within an expansive panoramic composition. The generously proportioned interior is richly ornamented with the signature central landscape enclosed by an elaborate floral and scrollwork border, while a finely gilt rim provides a refined finishing accent. The crisp transfer decoration and strong visual contrast exemplify the exceptional quality for which Spode has long been renowned. The underside bears the printed factory mark, "Spode England Italian Spode Design C.1816," identifying the piece as a later production honoring the original early nineteenth-century design. Equally suitable as a decorative centerpiece, fruit bowl, or serving vessel, this handsome example reflects the timeless appeal of one of English ceramics' most celebrated patterns.

  • Provenance: Private Collection.
  • Literature: The Spode "Italian" pattern was introduced in 1816 and remains one of the longest continuously produced ceramic patterns in the world. See Leonard Whiter, *Spode: A History of the Family, Factory and Wares from 1733 to 1833*, and Robert Copeland, *Spode*.
  • Circa: Late 20th century.
  • Condition: Overall very good vintage condition. No cracks, chips, or repairs observed. Light surface wear and minor utensil marks to the interior consistent with careful use. Minimal wear to the gilt rim. Underside exhibits expected shelf wear to the foot ring and minor factory firing imperfections.
