An early Mexican Rainbow Saltillo sarape
Circa 1890
Finely woven in multicolored wool in two panels seamed down the middle, with multiple geometric and foliate ombré shaded banded stripe motifs

  • Dimensions: 84" H x 39.5" W approximately
  • Notes:
Produced during the late nineteenth century, this Rainbow sarape represents a style that developed following the introduction of aniline dyes into Mexican textile production. Recognized for its narrow horizontal bands woven in a wide range of vivid "rainbow" colors and its intricate weaving, the style reflects the expanded palette available to weavers by the 1880s and 1890s.
  • Condition: With dust accumulation and typical signs of wear commensurate with age and use. Issues include, but not limited to: slight fading to side B, scattered general light soiling, with faint stains and small spots, scattered small holes and areas of loose weave and stitch losses, ravelling and scattered minor breaks to selvage cords on long edges, short edges with loose weave and a small loss to one edge, center seam with center neck opening stitched closed with various types of hand and machine stitches. Slightly visible stitch holes from a previous collar or facing. Side B with stitched fabric pole sleeve verso.

Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
