Ca. 600 - 650 CE. East Asia, Korea, Silla Kingdom. This reduction-fired gray to near-black stoneware jar swells from a broad splayed foot into a rounded body and finishes in a short neck with a crisply everted lip, its surface enriched by faint throwing rings and silvery firing clouds. Made from well-levigated clay and wheel-thrown, the vessel was fired in an oxygen-starved kiln to achieve its dense, resonant fabric and charcoal hue, a hallmark of Silla grayware. Such jars were integral to daily life and, more famously, to funerary assemblages, where they likely held offerings of grain or drink; closely related examples are preserved in the National Museum of Korea and the Gyeongju National Museum.

Provenance: Private Tull collection, Fresno, California, USA Collection
