JOHN F. ECHOLS
(1823 - 1896) Confederate brigadier general who served with Jackson and Loring, later succeeding Loring as commander of the Army of Southwest Virginia. A.E.S. on the verso of a war-date A.L.S. received from Confederate Assistant Secretary of the Treasury WILLIAM W. CRUMP (1819-1897), 1p. 8vo., [Richmond], Nov. 7, 1864, requesting that Echols release ten barrels of flour and fifty bushels of corn from his command to feed the civilian population of Richmond. Echols executes his endorsement on the verso in black ink, in full: ‘Respectfully forwarded to Maj. Gen. [John C.] Breckinridge. Judge Crump is Assistant Secretary of Treasury C. S. A. & needs the supplies mentioned', signing ‘Jno. Echols' and adding his rank "Brig Gen'. Lightly toned, shows original mailing folds with a 0.5 in. split thereto at the bottom edge from Echols' endorsement, and slightly ragged at the left edge, else very good overall.
