(THE DEATH OF RICHARD CHANNING PRICE)
A fine group of material related to the death of RICHARD CHANNING PRICE (1843-1863) Confederate major, aide-de-camp and adjutant to J.E.B. Stuart, and Assistant Adjutant General of the Cavalry Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, who was mortally wounded during the first day of the battle of Chancellorsville while at Stuart's side during a duel with Union artillery. Includes: a group of five partly-printed telegram forms, each 1p. oblong 8vo., containing messages sent through the Southern Telegraph Companies of Richmond, and each pertaining to Channing's death and the retrieval of his remains. The first, dated May 2, 1863 and sent by Channing's commander, J.E.B. Stuart, from Fredericksburg to the Confederate Surgeon General's Office in Richmond, reads, in full: ‘Maj R Channing Price was mortally wounded in the fight near Chancellorsville yesterday. He died last night. His remains in charge of his brother will get to Richmond tomorrow. Please give the information to his afflicted family. We are overwhelmed with grief at his fate.' Stuart's name appears at bottom, all in the hand of the receiving telegraph clerk. The second message, sent the same day by his brother Thomas Price, Jr. from Fredericksburg, reads in full: ‘The message is as follows – Channing was wounded yesterday and Died last night. I will bring the Remains to Richmond tomorrow 3rd, please break the tidings to the family – It will be best to speak first to Sister – Prepare to receive the remains at the Depot.' The remaining three messages, all sent May 6, including a second from Thomas Price Jr. to his father and two others, all detailing that Channing's body has been temporarily interred at Bowling Green, Virginia. He would later be reinterred at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, close to the plot of his beloved commander, J.E.B. Stuart. Each telegram shows folds with some minor splits or small tears to the edges, and is ragged at the left edge where ripped from a tablet, otherwise in very good condition overall. WITH: a fine content and association letter, 3pp. 8vo., Richmond, Jan. 23, [1883], from Price's mother, Christian Elizabeth Price, to Maj. Henry B. McClellan, who Stuart appointed as his adjutant general following Price's death. In large part: ‘I am afraid I misled you when I spoke of Papers – I have only letters from my dear boy – and some friendly ones from Gen Stuart – Telegrams – Dispatches &c – I will send you a few of Channing's badly written letters… They tell of Gen Stuart's raid into Pennsylvania , the battle of Fredericksburg – and the surrender of Harper's Ferry… If you find the letters of my boy – of any use – keep them and return them at your leisure. I call him my boy – he was only 20 years and 2 months – when he received the fatal wound. He had just left school and gone into business with his father - when the war broke out…' More good content related to Stuart and Channing's comrades. She signs ‘C E Price' at the conclusion in violet ink. Shows original mailing folds, otherwise in fine condition. Six pieces.
