"Espada Machete" Spanish-Colonial Infantry Officer's Machete-Sword
Late 19th century, Spanish
It is an "Espada Machete" (Sword-Machete): In tropical colonial theaters, regular military sabers were impractical because officers had to trek through thick jungle brush. Spanish officers commissioned German makers (like Weyersberg) to craft long, 28-inch fighting blades that had the clearing power of a machete but the length, balance, and status of a military sword. The Lion-Head Hilt: The cast hilt terminating in a lion's head is a hallmark decoration for Spanish military sidearms of this era. It symbolizes the Kingdom of Spain (The Lion of Leon). The blade is made by Weyersberg Brothers Co. , one of the oldest, most powerful, and most technologically innovative blade making dynasties in Solingen, Germany. It is marked and numbered #1008. This is a piece of late-1800s military history.
