AMERICAN, POSSIBLY VIRGINIA, TRAPUNTO WHITEWORK QUILT, hand-stitched, top with two joined panels having quilted and stuffed / corded designs, featuring stylized flowers and cornucopias with hearts to center, one edge with "Gilley Jones" name, surrounded by a grapevine inner border, outer border featuring plume leaf and flower pattern, surrounded by various initials comprising "PB", "MB", "J / M", "S / M", "AB", "WT", "J", "JLJ", "AA", "HJB", "EJ", "SB", "MW", "G / B", "L", "B", "C", "R", and "PM", basket motifs at top and bottom center edges and two corners, the other two are rounded, knife binding, multi-paneled muslin, or possibly linen, backing. Second quarter 19th century. 76" x 87 1/2".
Catalogue Note: The identity of Gilley Jones is uncertain. One of the candidates is Gilley [Gilly / Gillie] Marshall Jones (1791-1881), who was born in Culpeper or Albemarle Co., VA, daughter of John Marshall (c.1753-1819) and Sarah Weatherall (1758-1849). On April 27, 1809, Gilley married John Russell Jones (1787-1860), and the couple had 12 children and mainly lived in Charlottesville, VA.

    Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.

  • Condition:

    Good to very good visual condition with some toning and stains, several holes and losses with the majority having mends and patches, appears to have had fringe that was previously removed.
