WILLIAM WIRT ALLEN
(1835-1894) Confederate brigadier general, known for his command of cavalry, the last appointed major general by Jefferson Davis before the end of the war, but was never confirmed by the Confederate Senate and therefore surrendered as a brigadier. Late war-date manuscript L.S. 1p. 4to., Matthew's Bluff, SC, Jan. 16, 1865, to Col. JOHN WARREN GRIGBSY (1818-1877), chief of staff of Gen. Joseph Wheeler's cavalry corps. In full: ‘I respectfully request authority to send Lt. Crawford Div. Ord[nance] Officer to Augusta Geo, for the purpose of procuring Equipments for the command. Repeated Requisitions have been forwarded for them, but up to this time none have been received. I desire to have the command as thoroughly supplied as possible in arms & accoutrements, in view of the coming Inspection, and think that Lt. Crawford will be able to obtain them.' He signs boldly ‘Wm W. Allen' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen; Comdg'. The verso bears a lengthy response from Capt. S. P. Kern, chief ordnance officer of Wheeler's corps, detailing the supplies he has arranged to be delivered to Allen's command and promising more, declining the necessity to send another officer. The verso bears an additional A.E.S. by Col. Grigsby, returning the message to Allen. Shows original mailing folds, toned and with some soiling overall, and with some rodent damage to the right edge, still in very good overall condition.
