Greece, Classical period, ca. 5th century CE. An enticing leaded bronze relief of a wrestler, depicted bald and bearded as he bends one leg, extending the others in defense. A short kilt is tied at his waist as he lowers his head and hunches forward, readying to attack his opponent. Depictions of wrestlers were common in ancient Greek art, reflecting the sport's cultural importance and echoing the heroic struggles of figures like Herakles and Theseus. Often found on vases, sculptures, and coins, these portrayals capture the dynamic grappling of nude athletes, emphasizing strength, balance, and technique in intense competition. These artistic representations not only showcased athletic prowess but also connected the wrestlers to the legendary feats of mythical heroes, reinforcing ideals of discipline, physical excellence, and fair play celebrated within ancient Greek society, particularly during prestigious events like the Panhellenic Games. Size: 1" W x 1.6" H (2.5 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private Thousand Oaks, California, USA collection, acquired September 19, 2003; ex-Mark Bettinger collection
