BOXED ROBBINS & LAWRENCE PEPPERBOX 5-SHOT REVOLVER
A rare boxed Robbins & Lawrence Leonard's Patent 5-shot Breechloading Pepperbox pistol in .31 caliber with concealed hammer and ring trigger. The Samuel Robbins and Richard Lawrence unique design feature that set it apart during the golden era of the pepperbox, was the fact that the barrel cluster did not revolve, but instead the internal hammer rotated. The percussion caps were also more protected than other percussion revolvers due to the tip-down barrel design which allowed the shooter to replace the percussion caps on the nipples directly in line with the bores. It also featured a ring trigger that cocked and rotated the hammer to the next position, and a second trigger that wrapped around the ring which dropped the hammer, a truly unique design. Decorative engraving of floral scrolls adorn the iron frame and a portion of the barrel. The 4.5 in. long fluted barrel still shows well defined manufacturing stamps, to top of barrel: 'ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO.' and 'WINDSOR, VT.' and again with: 'LEONARDS PATENT. 1849.' Original dark rosewood grips, held in place with a machined metal screw, are both in fine condition with the original finish intact with no chips or cracks, excepting a few very minor dents and scrapes. SOLD WITH: A finely constructed custom wood box with brass hardware and a maroon velvet interior, a lidded sub-compartment containing approx. (50) .31 caliber balls, and four larger shot balls of various sizes. The lid of this subcompartment has been repaired with glue, and is affixed with a partial (broken) bone knob. Only about 7,000 of these revolvers were ever produced, all between 1851 and 1854, in a number of variations, this variation being a very early-production gun with the serial number: '175'. All parts of this antique firearm appear to be present, although no gunsmith has examined all of the internal parts. Very rare, in good condition.
