AMERICAN SILK-EMBROIDERED NEEDLEWORK BIBLICAL PICTURE, silk, chenille, silver gilt-thread, wool, paint, and pencil on silk, probably depicting the story in John chapter 4, verses 4 through 26 of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, featuring a man with rays around his head kneeling while a woman stands next to a well holding a bucket, surrounded by foliage and trees with a few sheep in the background. Housed under glass in a period, probably original, gilt-molded frame with eglomise mat featuring name of "DELIA SNYDER." to bottom center. First half 19th century. 16 5/8" x 13 7/8" sight, 24 1/8" x 21 7/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: The Valentine Museum noted that this piece could possibly be made in Virginia. The identity of the maker is undetermined, but there were several girls named Delia Snyder (Snider) living in the United States during the first half of the 19th century. There was a Dalia Snyder (Snider) (1835-1916), daughter of P. Henderson Henry Snyder (Snider) (1777-1841) and Mary Polly Hartman (b.1810), who lived in Roanoke Co., VA for most of her life. She married Isaac White Vinyard (1825-1908) some time after 1850, and the couple had at least six children.
Another possible candidate is Delia Bray Snyder (1796-1876), who was born in Allamuchy, Warren Co., New Jersey to parents Jacob Snyder (1766-1815) and Margaret Peggy Bray (1769-1843). She married Rev. George Benjamin Miller (1795-1869) on July 16, 1816, and the couple lived in Hartwick, Otsego Co., New York for most of their marriage.
