Mesopotamia, ca. 2000 - 1800 BCE. Gray-tan stone lower half of a cylinder seal having a carved rollout impression depicting a man in a horse drawn chariot chasing a leaping stag, probably a hunting scene, and a bull with large curved horn under the horses legs. A very early and rare depiction of a horse driven chariot. According to AI: “The chariot was likely invented in the Eurasian Steppe or Mesopotamia, with evidence pointing to its development before 2000 B.C., though early, heavier, solid-wheeled, horse or ox-drawn vehicles appeared around 3000 B.C. In Sumeria. The critical invention of the lightweight spoked wheel, which allowed for speed and combat agility, emerged around 2000 B.C. In the Sintashta culture (modern Russia) and soon spread through the Near East. Size: 0.75”H x 0.56”W (1.9 x 1.4cm).

Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired from Bill Veres, London, 6/30/95, with copy of receipt, #11 on list.
