MAXCY GREGG
(1814 - 1862) Confederate brigadier general and ardent secessionist, commanded troops with distinction at Gaines Mill and Second Bull Run. Wounded at Antietam by the same bullet that killed Genl. Lawrence O. B. Branch. Died from wounds sustained at Fredericksburg. Rare war-date A.E.S. with fine military content and his ultimate rank in black ink on a 3 x 4.5 in. slip of paper cut from a larger document, in full: ‘Respectfully forwarded, with the request that an order may be given to allow 175 Enfield Rifles for the 13th Regt. on the arrival of that number of recruits – and that instructions may be given as to repairing the arms which are out of order.' He signs in full at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl Comg 4th [uncl.]', and the date ‘23 March 1862'. Mounted to a slightly larger backing card, somewhat toned and with mild soiling, otherwise in very good condition overall.
