FINE VIRGINIA CHIPPENDALE CARVED WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR, featuring shaped crest rail with distinctive spiraled or scrolled ears, splat with vertical lobate piercings intersected by a medial band and set into a separate shoe, serpentine arm rests terminating in carved volutes above shaped supports, trapezoidal molded-edge seat frame marked "II" to front rail, all raised on square legs joined with robust box stretcher. Retains likely original yellow pine slip seat marked with corresponding "II" and an old refinished surface with mellow color. Circa 1790. Probably Alexandria, VA. 37" HOA, 23" x 17 1/2" seat, 17" seat height.
Literature: See MESDA Object Database, Photo # S-5984, for a similar example, now in a private collection, from the same school or cabinetshop.
Catalogue Note: The present armchair is attributed to a school or cabinetshop in Alexandria, Virginia. There are at least seven examples, dubbed the "Alexandria Chairs Group" by Luke Beckerdite, with Alexandria attributions recorded in the MESDA database, each bearing nearly identical crest rails, splat design, and stretcher arrangement. Interestingly, the arm profile on the present chairs are remarkably similar to those on documented Frederick Co., Maryland examples, which also exhibit through-mortised side rails and similar leg and stretcher arrangement. At present, it is unclear whether there is a single shop or if there is a network of shops involved in the manufacture of these distinctive chairs. Research is ongoing.

  • Provenance:

From a Richmond, VA private collection.
    Ex-Sumpter Priddy III, Inc.

  • Condition:

Very good overall condition with minor scattered wear throughout. Minor cracks and old repair to proper left arm rest. Minor crack to base of splat. Seat re-upholstered and marked to underside for "Valley Forge" conservator.
