Well-Documented Mark Wheland Engraved and Relief Carved Contemporary Bonewitz Flintlock Swivel Breech Combination Gun This beautiful combination gun was featured in the January 2010 issue of "American Tradition: The Journal of the Contemporary Longrifle Association" in the article "Master Apprentice Master" by Henry Bishop in the section "The Bonewitz Influence on a Modern-Day Master" discussing the John Bonewitz details incorporated by Mark Wheland in his work on this combination gun and a bench copy of a Bonewitz rifle that was sold by Rock Island Auction Co. in December 2024. This combination gun features design details taken from three different Bonewitz signed rifles and a Bonewitz attributed rifle. The patchbox design was copied from the c. 1790 "Red Bonewitz" rifle. The carving just ahead of the patchbox finial was copied from a c. 1800s Bonewitz. The carving on the left side of the butt behind the cheekpiece is based on an early signed relic rifle, and the carving at the front is based on the standard Bonewitz carving from the 1790s and later. The carving at the barrel tang is based on the carving on an example displayed at the Chickamauga Battlefield Museum. Both barrels were originally .58 caliber and rifled and are equipped with traditional dovetailed blade and notch sights. One barrel is signed "M. Wheland" and was carefully bored to 20 gauge smoothbore. There are three engraved silver inlays along one of the forend panels, and the cheekpiece inlay is an engraved silver star.
