An antique American shelf clock in the ogee style, manufactured by Pond & Barnes of Boston, Massachusetts, active circa 1845-1850. The rectangular mahogany-veneered wooden case features a broad, curved frame. The back of the case is constructed from two vertical wooden boards. The lower door panel contains a reverse-painted (eglomise) glass decoration on a green ground, depicting a spread-wing eagle above a central medallion featuring a female profile silhouette in the style of Liberty, surrounded by gilded foliate and floral scrolls. The interior of the case retains its original printed paper label which reads: IMPROVED BRASS CLOCKS. POND & BARNES, No. 73 WATER STREET, BOSTON, along with setting and maintenance instructions. The clock features a mechanical weight-driven brass movement and a striking mechanism that hits a wire coil gong. The painted dial has black Roman numeral hour markers, an outer minute track with dots, and a central circular aperture revealing the internal brass gears. The dial is signed POND & BARNES above the center and BOSTON below. A handwritten pencil inscription at the bottom edge of the dial reads: John Balzer of Liverpool April 20th 1872. Accessories include two heavy cylindrical weights, a brass pendulum bob, and a winding key.
