Aegean, Greece,, ca. 1375–400 BCE. A rounded, ovoid body rises from a small ring foot to a short flaring neck, flanked by two upright loop handles set at the shoulder. The buff fabric carries lustrous reddish-brown to near-black slip laid in horizontal bands, with a frieze of continuous running spirals encircling the belly between framing lines. This decorative grammar, banded zones interrupted by a single ornamental register. The form, Lebes Gamikos, was a marriage vessel and would have had a lid to cover the precious oils it once held. The worn surface preserves the assured hand of a potter working within a confident, broadly shared ceramic tradition. Size: 5.3" W x 5" H x 5.1" D (13.5 cm W x 12.7 cm H x 13.0 cm D).

Provenance: ex-private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s
