JOHN H. WINDER
(1800-1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. Fine content and association, war-date A.L.S. on rough brown ‘hardship' paper, 1p. 4to., ‘Camp Sumter', Andersonville, Aug. 27, 1864, to Alabama governor THOMAS H. WATTS (1819-1892). In full: ‘Your telegram of 25th inst in reference to the establishment of a Military Prison in Alabama has been received. I agree entirely in your opinion in reference to the site suitable for the Prison and sometime since recommended either one of the two places mentioned by you as the very best points in the State of Alabama. My opinion was overruled in Richmond at the time. I will again refer the matter to the War Department with your opinion upon the subject.' He signs ‘Jno H Winder' at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank. Shows original mailing folds, otherwise in fine condition. The plans discussed here by Winder and Watts never came to fruition, as Cahaba Prison in Selma, established in June of 1863, remained the only military prison in Alabama at war's end.
