Mojeno Daro, India, mature Harappan period, ca. 2800 - 2500 BCE. Two smaller burnt steatite square stamp seals, the larger has an integral double suspension lug on the back. Decorated with a deeply carved profile horned standing bull, its shoulder is covered by a harness, and script in the upper portion containing a standing dog. Together with a small stamp seal bead of square form, having a carved standing bull with an inscription above. Reverse is carved with geometric “rolling log” design. Perforated through the center for suspension. Stamp seals were used in antiquity as marks of ownership and badges of status. In the large urban centers of the Harappan civilization, square-shaped stamp seals were found in excavations. They are engraved with images of wild or domestic animals, humans, fantastic creatures, and possibly divinities. The Indus script, invented around 2600 B.C., is yet to be fully deciphered. Size: 0.88” x 0.88” (2.2 x 2.2cm) & 0.38” x 0.38” (1 x 1cm).

Provenance: Private NYC. collection. Ex. Zahir Jan Samand, 5/2007.
