Very Fine Well-Documented Civil War Era Cased Factory Engraved Colt Model 1862 Police Percussion Revolver Samuel Colt's "New Model Revolving Police Pistol" came out just in time for the American Civil War and would have been an excellent sidearm for a police officer in one of the new police departments popping up in cities across the country or as a private sidearm for a soldier. The Pocket Police offered more firepower in a package the same size as the extremely popular Model 1849 Pocket and featured a round barrel and toothed loading lever like the full-sized Model 1860 Army revolver and a very attractive fluted and stepped cylinder. They are considered by many to be the most attractive of all of Colt's percussion revolvers. Because they were designed to be great carry guns, they are hard to find in high condition, and this revolver is certainly among the very best extant, especially when you consider the exceptional Gustave Young style factory engraving and the fact that it is featured on page 187 of "The Colt Engraving Book Volume One" by Wilson in the chapter on Gustave Young. This stunning revolver was manufactured in 1862 during the Civil War. The engraving consists of elaborate flowing scroll engraving with beaded backgrounds, fan accents, and a wolf head on the hammer. Aside from the engraving and the varnished select walnut grip, the revolver has the standard markings, including matching partial or full serial numbers on the wedge, arbor, cylinder, barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, and grip. "2" is marked on the breech face of the barrel as well as above or below the main serial number locations. The mahogany case contains a cap tin, small Great Seal of the U.S. themed powder flask, a "36 B" marked blued Colt ball/bullet mold, and several lead balls.

The grip is also very fine and has attractive figure, nearly all of the original varnish, minor edge wear and slight handling and storage marks. Mechanically excellent. The relined case and accessories are very good and have age and storage related wear, and the mold retains the vast majority of their original blue finish and has minor oxidation. Overall, this is a very attractive cased Civil War factory engraved Colt Model 1862 Police.
