1966 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE (TYPE 1) 1300
Serial No. 116655721, manufactured January 1966. Powered by a clean, original 1300cc code F engine, delivering approximately 45 horsepower. Odometer reads 17,222 miles. Electrical system upgraded to 12 volts, equipped with an in-dash 1969-vintage Sapphire XVIII AM radio and an aftermarket Sony cassette player in the glove compartment. Gently-worn but intact "Balearic beige" leatherette upholstery. Seatbelts with Wolfsburg-crest buckles. New 165/80R15 blackwall radial tires.

Java Green paint is clean with a few minor scuffs and chips, and a small dent at the base of the right front fender. Some body work is evident along the door frames. Chrome trim shows even wear, and unused replacement trim strips and chrome exhaust tips are stowed in the luggage compartment. Headliner needs attention, but a VW-branded replacement in its original box is stowed in the luggage compartment. Floor mats show heavy wear, but floor pans are solid. Heater boxes are stiff but operable.

Offered for sale here at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries is an iconic piece of automotive history! The Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle took American car buyers by storm in the 1960s, offering practical, compact, affordable transportation, and this specimen demonstrates why. The 1300 engine was sold in the US market only in 1966, offering a 25 percent increase in horsepower over the previous model, along with an effective and efficient combination of lively acceleration and outstanding fuel economy. Volkswagen expert John Muir, whose "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" was the maintenance bible for every do-it-yourself VW owner for many decades, considered the 1966 Beetle the peak technical development of this legendary vehicle. This example offers a solid foundation for an outstanding restoration.
