United States Liberty Head (Matron Head) Large Cent, struck in copper and featuring the classic Christian Gobrecht design issued during the Middle Date large cent period. The obverse depicts Liberty facing left with flowing curls and a beaded coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars and the date 1836 below. The reverse carries the inscription ONE CENT within a laurel wreath, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This example displays a visible planchet flaw along the rim, characteristic of early U.S. minting processes where imperfections were common in blank preparation.
