    Notes:
Online genealogy reports Abigail Stetson Sprague was born April 2, 1788 in Plymouth, Massachusetts and died in 1862 in Kings, New York. She was the wife of Captain Oakman Sprague (1776-1816) of Mansfield, Massachusetts until his death in 1816. She remarried to Hon. Josiah Willis Seaver (1777-1847) of Vermont and New York. She is interred next to Seaver in the Mount Hope Cemetery Rochester, New York.

Long ago, some past custodian of Abigail Stetson Sprague's portrait decided to inscribe "William Matthew Prior" upon the reverse. It was well-intentioned, but mistaken: Prior (1806-1873) did not make his mark upon glass until the 1850s, when his mass-produced presidential likenesses kept his painting business afloat. Instead, it was Benjamin Greenleaf (1769-1821) – unique in his skill and his choice of medium – who traveled across New England taking likenesses on glass.

Biographical research places Benjamin Greenleaf in Bath, Maine, in December 1816 and early 1817, when he began painting a series of striking portraits of Bath residents. Over the years of his career, he evolved from profile likenesses to front-facing portraits of greater depth and complexity, as seen in the Bath group. This would have been when he painted Abigail Stetson Sprague (1787-1862). By the time Greenleaf arrived, Abigail was still in her mourning attire, perhaps lamenting the lack of closure: her husband, Captain Oakman Sprague, had met an untimely end in Oct. 1816, dying far away in the Dominican Republic. They had been married only five years.

In her portrait, Abigail is meticulously painted, in Greenleaf's typical style, and finely dressed in delicate jewelry, despite her somber attire. (She would later remarry, in 1822, and live a long, happy life to the age of 70.) She seems like a keen, pragmatic woman, determined to carry on, no matter the setbacks. Remarkably, the inscription on her gravestone suggests her tenacity: "Arise and depart, for this is not your rest." What an interesting individual she must have been. And, all those years earlier, Greenleaf captured her powerful character perfectly.

    Condition notes:
The condition of Abigail's portrait is unusually fine, for a Benjamin Greenleaf painting; it has sustained no cracks, chips, or other damage typical to Greenleaf's on glass, due to the fragility of their medium. Many of his best works have sustained serious damage, although some have been ably repaired. She demonstrates some thinning in the light areas of the paint, as is standard for Greenleaf's Bath portrait group. She has been carefully cared for.
