(ST. ALBANS RAID) BENNETT H. YOUNG
(1843-1919) Confederate cavalry officer, leader of the October 19, 1864 raid on St. Albans, Vermont. Bennett's force of 21 cavalrymen crossed into Vermont from Canada and staged an armed robbery on three banks in the town, seizing $208,000. Corralling the citizens on the town green, they killed one and wounded another before attempting to burn the town and retreating to Canada, where they were arrested in Montreal. A Canadian court ruled that Bennett and his men were legitimate combatants who could not be extradited without compromising Canadian neutrality, and they were freed. Rare partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 4to., June 17, 1893, a certificate issuing three shares in the Louisville Southern Railroad Company, boldly signed in black ink by Young as president at lower right. Shows a vertical fold and file holes at the left margin, otherwise in fine condition overall.
