THERESIENSTADT CAMP SURVIVOR'S STAR, CLOTHING, PERSONAL EFFECTS AND DOCUMENTS
Historically important and exceedingly rare grouping of items once owned by Jewish concentration camp inmate Ernst Moses Aron who was held at Theresienstadt (Terezin) in Czechoslovakia and one of the 30,000 (of 150,000) who survived their imprisonment. A large amount of important pieces were kept by Aron for posterity. These include: a rather cheaply fabricated jacket, most likely a wartime Arbeitsjacke lightly used with an absolutely authentic German-issue yellow and black 'Jude' Star of David, 3.5 in. across, the weave and printing entirely consistent with authentic examples. A piece of matching fabric was stitched to the reverse, and hooks have been sewn to the tips of each star. Aron chose to puncture his jacket with holes to accommodate this star. Sold with a 12 x 7 in. printed Czech flag (one-sided) bearing a hand-stitched repair and fixed to a wooden staff, typically issued to newly-liberated prisoners; the blue and white enameled steel cooking pot used by Aron at the camp, 6.5 in. dia., 2.75 in. deep, made in Pilsen and very heavily used; Aron's pince nez eyeglasses, also heavily used with one lens badly cracked, in rusted lined steel case; a 3.5 x 2.25 in. white cloth patch stamped 'KLT' in black ink, worn and a bit faded, issued to liberated ghetto prisoners who assisted Czech and Soviet medical corpsmen in the days after the liberation of the camp (museum verified); a rare April, 1945 prisoner's meal ration coupon card from Theresienstadt, with Stars of David printed thereon, issued to 'Ernst Aron'; three pieces of Theresienstadt camp currency (two 1 krone, one 2 kronen), 1943, pictures Moses against what appears to be a barbed wire background, rare in this circulated condition; an especially rare ticket for a concert at the camp, April 11, 1945; five postcards (one blank), three sent to Aron prior to his incarceration while he was in Chvateruby, Bohemia, one sent to Aron by his brother already at Thersienstadt in February, 1942; two Red Cross parcel labels from packages sent to the camp; a wartime postcard photograph of a large structure at the camp, likely an administration building; one wardate and two postwar postcards of the camp and a memorial; two postwar copies of maps of the camp as given to those arriving there for detention; graphic publication 'The Terezin Torture Chamber' by Josef Vosolsobe (Prague: Delnik Nakladatelstvi), 1945. Approx. 30pp. 8vo. with about 25 photo illustrations, text (Czech) with images of the horrific depredations at the camp seemingly contrasted with the images presented to the public; 'Terezin', [no publishing data but Czech, ca. 1945], abt. 40pp. 4to., similar content; and a small grouping of press clippings. These frightful relics are all contained within a very worn brown painted metal suitcase, 22 x 14 x 6.5 in., made by 'Vulkan', the top lid bearing the owner's name painted in worn white letters 'Aron Ernst' below his assigned transport transport identification 'AE 4176'. This bag was used by Aron when deported to the ghetto. This same identification is also shown on Aron's documentation included in the grouping. Certainly one of the most important such groupings we've seen offered anywhere. Consigned by a longtime professional private tour guide for those seeking to visit the German concentration camps in Czechoslovakia and surrounding countries, a British-born gentleman long residing in Czechoslovakia and now retired.
