U.S. 'TOP SECRET' 6TH MARINE DIV. OKINAWA INVASION BATTLE MAPS (3)
Lot of three Okinawa 'Top Secret' pre-invasion maps prepared for the attack made by the U.S. 6th Marine Division which landed at Hagushi Bat on April 1, 1945 and which eventually took over 8,000 casualties. The earliest map, 16 x 18 in. and dated November, 1944 shows the 'SIXTH MARINE DIVISION AREA', specifically the region of Okinawa including Inubi, Mekaniku, Maeta, Kuba, and Irammiya. 'Maeta' is the phonetic misspelling of Maeda and the Maeda Escarpment is commonly known as 'Hacksaw Ridge'. The second map, 9.5 x 17.5 in., is a closer depiction of the area including Gima, Nagah, Hanza, Sobe, and Zachini, with Nagah likely referring to Naha, a ket target for the Marines. The final map, 15 x 19.75 in., is dated Jan. 30, 1945 and is printed in black and green. It depicts the entire island and is captioned 'LAND TRANSPORT MAP'. Various areas bear number designations which are addressed by a key at right which describes the type of land and surface composition, the ease or difficulty with which roads could be constructed, highlands, etc. Folds with a minor marginal loss at right, else very good. Three pieces.
