FRANKLIN CO., SOUTHWEST / VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PAINTED POPLAR PUNCHED-TIN-PANELED FOOD / PIE / MEAT SAFE, of overly-large form probably for large meat storage, the rectangular top with an applied tall gallery with shaped front edges over two short drawers each set with the original turned knobs over two doors each set with three punched-tin panels which conceal two removable shelves, the whole flanked by ends each set with three punched-tin panels and raised on turned legs which issue from the stile. Each tin is made of a full sheet with an applied half sheet, featuring a large central Masonic-style arch flanked by two smaller arches over a variety of circular and crescent forms. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Retains an early green surface over the likely original salmon, which is retained on one end. Possibly made by Abner Bennett (1794-1853). Mid 19th century. 61" HOA, 55 1/4" WOA, 27" DOA.
Catalogue Note: A verbal history accompanying this lot stated that it was made by a Bennett in Franklin Co., and that he made two, one for each of his daughters. The Bennett who best fits this profile is Abner Bennett (Pittsylvania/Franklin Co., VA, 1794-1853), who had two daughters. Abner was listed as a farmer in all of the census records we were able to locate, which still leaves the possibility that he is working as a cabinetmaker in the winter or slower farming times, but reports himself as a farmer when the census is taken in the summer.
Another possible maker in Franklin Co. is George Washington Swepstone (1803-1869). Swepstone is also recorded as a farmer in every census except for 1850 when he is listed as "cabinetmaker".

  • Provenance:

From an East Coast private collection.

  • Condition:

Good overall condition with typical moderate wear, some insect damage, rust on the tins, and small losses; a short board added to the underside edge at one end, probably to reinforce that corner; one tin with the paint removed.

Accepted Forms of Payment:

ACH, MasterCard, Money Order / Cashiers Check, Visa, Wire Transfer
