This antique provincial sterling silver tea caddy spoon was manufactured in Exeter in 1833 by the silversmith William Rawlings Sobey. The spoon features a wide, shovel-form bowl with a scalloped edge and a short, flat fiddle-style handle. The terminal of the handle is decorated with an engraved script monogram, appearing to be the initials JDL. The piece is presented in a black leatherette presentation box with a velvet and silk-lined interior, stamped for Louis Wine Ltd. of Toronto, and includes an original retail tag from the same firm. The underside of the handle bears a full set of British hallmarks including the maker mark WRS for William Rawlings Sobey, a lowercase letter r date mark for 1833, the lion passant indicating sterling silver purity, the castle mark for the Exeter assay office, and the sovereign's head duty mark for King William IV. Total weight 14g.
