GENERAL CHESTER "CHET" BRADDOCK DEGAVRE (ONANCOCK, VIRGINIA, 1908-1993) FOLK ART CARVED AND PAINTED DECOY DIORAMA, an elaborate composition featuring three full-body woodcocks perched on driftwood and mushrooms, a landscape, painted by the carver's wife, in the background, all within a rustic frame inscribed "American Woodcock by deCavre" and signed "T de G" lower right. Circa 1970. 29 3/4" x 42 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note: In addition to being a talented wildlife carver, General Chester "Chet" deGavre (1908-1993) had a storied military career. A 1933 graduate of West Point, deGavre joined the Airborne Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he worked to improve the techniques and technologies associated with paratroopers. For his efforts, he was named Chief of Staff for the 1944 airborne invasion of southern France and played an important part in one of the most significant military operations in history. He eventually achieved the rank of Brigadier General and was awarded the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit for his service during the Korean War.
In 1963, Chet and his wife, Tita, retired to their home "Deep Creek Plantation" in Onancock, Virginia, where he reconnected with his passion for wildlife carving, particularly decoys. His work is highly sought after today.
