  • Medium: Unique oil and watercolor with laser-cut collage on wove papers
  • Notes:
The unique print "Skeleton Pushing Elephant" by Francisco Toledo exemplifies the artist's fascination with animals, mortality, and surreal imagery. In this composition, a skeletal figure faces an elephant, straining to push the large form creating a scene that is both playful and symbolic. The contrast between the fragile skeleton and the massive animal evokes themes of life and death, strength and vulnerability, and the persistence of human effort in the face of overwhelming forces.

Like much of Toledo's work, the image draws on Mexican cultural traditions, including the symbolic use of skeletons and the parallel world of shadows, while blending reality and fantasy in a way that encourages multiple interpretations. The print reflects Toledo's distinctive and experimental visual language, where animals and human-like figures become vehicles for exploring imagination, transformation, and the cycles of existence. Each of the nine laser-cut and painted examples from this composition have unique palettes. The present work's skeleton is positioned differently from other examples from this edition, in order to enhance the shadow effect caused by the purple-grey tones of the under paper.
