  • Notes:
Francisco Toledo was renowned for his imaginative animal sculptures, which drew inspiration from the natural world, Zapotec traditions, and the folklore of his native Oaxaca. Rather than depicting conventionally beautiful creatures, Toledo often focused on bats, iguanas, toads, insects, monkeys, and other animals like the present cayman, transforming them into expressive, fantastical beings that blurred the boundaries between traditional and artistic animal forms. His sculptures, created in materials such as clay, bronze, wood, and stone, formed part of a larger "fantastic zoology" that explored themes of nature, mythology, transformation, and identity. Through these works like the cayman, whose belly could also be interpreted as a trap, Toledo celebrated Indigenous cultural heritage while inviting viewers into a dreamlike world where animals embodied both the mysteries and vitality of life.
