An Impressive Japanese Household Shrine, Meiji Period, Dated 1880
The rectangular shrine surmounted by an openwork panel intricately carved with flying cranes amidst stylized clouds, set above double-hinged doors opening to reveal a secondary set of interior louvered doors. Crafted from hinoki (cypress) wood, the doors open to a tripartite sanctuary sheltering a central standing figure of Amitabha Buddha flanked by two seated bodhisattvas. The figures are set beneath a domed roof with exposed beams invoking traditional Buddhist temple architecture, supported by four columns against gold lacquered interior walls. The entire structure is raised on a stepped base fitted with six gold-lacquered drawers, the gilt lacquer wass added later in 1908.
