This pair of sterling silver spoons features the Louis XV pattern, produced by the Whiting Manufacturing Company and patented in 1891. The handles are designed in the Rococo Revival style, characterized by ornate scrolling borders, foliated flourishes, and scalloped shell-shaped terminals. Both spoons bear personalized Spencerian script monograms on the handle terminals. The spoons were retailed by the Bixby Silver Co., a firm active in Providence, Rhode Island, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The deep, circular bowls are typical of cream soup or fruit spoons. The necks of the spoons are stamped with the Whiting Manufacturing Company maker mark consisting of a lion passant with its paw resting on a shield containing a gothic letter W, followed by the words STERLING and PAT. 189 (the final digit of the patent date is partially obscured). The side of the handle is stamped with the retailer mark BIXBY SILVER CO. Total weight 78g.
