EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT CHIPPENDALE CHERRY DESK AND BOOKCASE
Massachusetts or Connecticut, 1790-1815
In three parts: the removable hood, the bookcase section and the desk case. Hood with tall cresting gallery, the front panels carved and the side panels carved and pierced, stop-fluted plinths at the corners and the center, and its five original finials -- flaming urns at the corners and a flaming orb at the center. Bookcase section with band of gadrooning and an applied fretwork frieze above paneled cupboard doors enclosing an arrangement of shelves. Doors flanked by stop-fluted pilasters and fluted three-quarter columns. Desk case with a slant lid, an oxbow upper drawer and two serpentine full-width drawers flanked by three-quarter columns, and scroll-carved ogee bracket feet. Waterfall interior fitted with valanced pigeonholes, document holders and two tiers of undulating drawers. Old dry alligatored surface. Pine secondary woods.

    Smith Family Estate Auction, Barre, Massachusetts, August 18, 1985. At the time of the auction, Warner F. Smith said his family had been in the area of Barre since the 18th Century and family history indicated the piece was made in Barre in the 18th Century by ancestor John Smith and it had descended through the family from the time it was made.
    Purchased at the auction by John Walton, Griswold, Connecticut.
