Colt First Generation Single Action Army Revolver in Very Scarce .44 Russian with Factory Letter The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver as the sole gun of its type in a shipment on October 5, 1911, to Stauffer Eshleman & Co. in New Orleans, Louisiana, for D. Robinson (no additional information) in .44 Russian with a 5 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, and type of grips not listed. Only 154 standard frame Single Action Army revolvers were recorded in factory ledgers as shipped in .44 Russian per page 252 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by R.L. Wilson. Colt offered the .44 Russian chambering in the standard Single Action Army revolvers on a special order basis. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line Colt Hartford address and "44 RUSSIAN CTG." is on the left. The left side of the frame has the two-line patent dates followed by the Rampant Colt. It has a blade front sight and frame-top groove rear sight, and a pair of checkered hard rubber grips. Matching visible serial numbers are marked on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The cylinder is marked with a "V" and a "4" on the rear, faint non-matching "1612" is hand etched on the interiors of both grips, and assembly number "582" is on the loading gate and rear of the frame. "J L SHOEMAKE/2-29-60" is period hand carved on the interior of the left grip.
