JANE RANKIN
American, 1945-2019

Bronze
Sculpture depicting a young child standing in a nightgown, gazing upward with a gentle smile while cradling a teddy bear close to his chest. The child's tousled hair and softly rendered facial expression convey warmth and innocence. The bronze displays a rich, warm brown patina; it is mounted on a circular wooded base, and the base of the bronze is inscribed "Bedtime," "1992," "10/20," and signed "Jane Rankin," indicating this is the tenth cast from a limited edition of twenty.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Jane A. Rankin (1945–2019) was an American sculptor best known for her bronze figurative work depicting children, capturing what she described as their naturalness and spontaneity. Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1945, she went on to live across North Carolina, New Jersey, Georgia, California, Turkey, Kansas, and Virginia before eventually settling in Monument, Colorado. She viewed her sculpture as a means of prompting reflection and evoking pleasant memories, believing that beauty plays an essential role in emotional and social well-being, and she frequently drew inspiration for her pieces from her own children and grandchildren.
  • Dimensions: height (including wooden base) approx: 15.25 inches
