This early-to-mid 20th-century wooden storage container is a large bent-wood firkin or pantry-style vessel designed for industrial agricultural distribution. The exterior surface is finished in yellow paint with black stenciled text. The front panel is stenciled with the words SEMI-SOLID BUTTERMILK and TRADE MARK. A side panel features stenciling for 65 LBS. NET along with the alphanumeric codes 48 B1 and 46. The container is built using a bent-wood stave method, held together with metal staples and a single vertical metal reinforcement band. It includes a matching wooden lid with a deep overlapping rim. The interior is darkened and shows evidence of heavy staining from previous contents. This type of vessel was historically used to distribute buttermilk-based supplements for livestock and poultry feed.
