This is a hand-woven African traditional Zulu basket, known as an ukhamba, featuring a bulbous pear-shaped body and a matching conical lid topped with a cylindrical finial. The basket is constructed using a tight coiling technique with ilala palm fibers. The exterior is decorated with an all-over geometric pattern consisting of stepped diamond and triangular motifs in a three-color palette of natural tan, reddish-brown, and black. A thin cord connects the lid to the rim of the basket. The base of the object shows a concentric spiral pattern marking the start of the coiled construction. These baskets are traditionally used in South African Zulu culture for tasks such as storing grain or serving beer, with specific patterns often carrying symbolic meaning related to marriage or social status.
