A vintage Socony (Standard Oil Company of New York) motor oil bottle, common to service stations in the early 20th century. The item consists of a clear glass bottle with a one-quart capacity and a screw-on tinned steel spout. The front of the glass bottle is embossed with the brand name SOCONY MOTOR OIL within a rectangular panel. The upper shoulder and neck are embossed with ONE QUART LIQUID and FILL TO LINE, situated above a horizontal fill line. The base of the glass bottle bears the embossed trademark of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company (a diamond superimposed over an O with an I in the center), a mark introduced in 1929. The base also includes numeric codes denoting factory and mold identification. The metal spout is embossed with SOCONY and the patent date PAT SEPT 14 1926. This type of equipment predates the standard use of sealed metal oil cans and was used to dispense bulk oil directly into vehicles. One quart liquid capacity.
