East Asia, Japan, late Edo to Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. An elaborate leaded bronze censer and sculptural centerpiece formed with a domed, pierced lid designed to release incense smoke, the surface cast in low relief with swirling cloud motifs. A large three clawed dragon coils along one side, while above stands a dynamic male Immortal figure holding a raised vessel, his expression animated as if reacting to the liquid about to spill. His draped robes billow with a sense of movement, and his other hand once held an object now lost. The lid rests on a five legged support over an integral pedestal base, centered with an archaic character mark. Notably, the interior incense bowl is no longer present. Size: 13" W x 22.3" H (33 cm x 56.6 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from a Los Angeles, California, USA gallery acquisition dates range from the late 1990s to 2005

Item # 195112

  • Condition: Missing the primary incense holding vessel, with the domed lid now resting directly on the support rim rather than its intended interior container. The figure's arm holding the pot shows a break and has been reattached with a brass peg, the wrist fits loosely and does not sit flush. The secondary hand is missing its original object. The surface shows a dark, even patina with areas of wear and minor abrasions, but the metal remains stable. Even with these condition points, the piece retains a strong presence and remains visually compelling!
