Democratic Republic of Congo, . “Nkisi” power effigy in form of a male ancestor, carved of hardwood with predominantly geometric forms. The calm contemplative face bears a triangular nose, hollowed, upturned mouth, angular beard, and hollowed relief ears. The figure’s hands rest at the sides of a rounded abdomen with a hollowed navel, retaining remnants of organic empowering material. An animal pelt forms a collar at the neck, complemented by a raffia belt with wooden pegs. The figure is further characterized by a pointed phallus, slightly bowed legs with accentuated knees, and flat feet set on a circular integral base. Size: 25”H (63.5cm).

  • Condition: The surface shows age cracks and moderate wear, including abrasions around the base; there is no remaining horn or fetish insert at the crown. Medium brown patina with light deposits, commensurate with age with relatively limited evidence of prolonged use.
