Extremely Rare Martially Inspected U.S. Civil War Contract Colt Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver with Cartridge Pouch This extraordinary rare martially inspected U.S. Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver was manufactured in 1862 as part of a 2,000 gun contract with the Ordnance Department signed on April 13, 1861. Although the Ordnance Department subsequently purchased 363 additional Model 1861 Navy revolvers from Colt distributors, the 2,000 pistols purchased under the April 1861 contract were the only Ordnance inspected, military finished Model 1861 Navy revolvers manufactured by Colt during the Civil War. After the U.S. contract Walker revolvers, the U.S. contract Model 1861 Navy revolvers are the rarest U.S. martial Colt percussion handguns. This revolver has the Colt military finish with low-polish blue barrel and cylinder, color casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer; natural brass trigger guard and back strap, and oil-finished walnut grip. The wedge, screws, and trigger are nitre blue. The barrel has a nickel-sliver front sight, and the hammer has a sight notch and hand-knurled spur. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" reading toward the breech. The cylinder is roll-stamped with the Naval Battle of Campeche scene with "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843." on the leading edge. "COLTS PATENT NO." and the partial serial number "132" are stamped on the cylinder center-line. "COLT'S/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The matching partial serial number "132" is also marked on the wedge and cylinder pin and handwritten in rear mortise of the grip. The full matching serial number "6132" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with an Ordnance inspector cartouche. Small "B" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on the right side of the barrel lug and side and back of the cylinder. A "C" inspection mark is on the left side of the barrel at the breech, and an "F" is on the right. The side of the cylinder has "L" and "F" inspection marks. An "L" inspection mark is stamped on the top of the back strap, and an "S" is marked just behind the trigger guard bow. An "A" inspection mark is stamped on the butt of the grip on the left. A black leather cartridge pouch with an asterisk marked on the back is included.

  • Provenance: Michael Simens; The Greg Lampe Collection
  • Condition: Exceptionally fine. This rare U.S. contract Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver retains 85% plus of the original case colors, 50% original blue finish, the original "feathered" polishing visible by the front sight and curve of the barrel lug, cylinder with hints of blue, attractively aged patina on the grip strap, some faint oxidation and pitting, a patch of mild pitting on the hammer, and fairly light overall wear suggesting limited use in the Civil War. The grip is fine with a lightly visible hand worn cartouche, light edge wear, and minor scratches. Mechanically excellent. The cartridge pouch is fine with some flakes, small tears, and age and storage related wear
