THOMAS SULLY (AMERICAN, 1783-1872), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF ANNA BURTON GEORGE (RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, 1808-1855), watercolor, depicting a finely-dressed young girl with sandy-colored hair under her bonnet which is tied with a blue bow matching the bow around her waist. No signature located. Retains a hanging tag reading "Little Miss Burton / Daughter of Robert Burton / Sr." Housed in the likely original rose gold frame that tested as 10K gold fineness. Circa 1815. 2 7/8" x 2 1/2" OA.
Published: "An Exhibition of Virginia Miniatures" The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, December 3, 1941 to January 5th, 1942. Catalogue plate VII, top.
Catalogue Note: This portrait was lent by "The Misses Boykin" to The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for a 1941 exhibition, the catalogue from the exhibition spuriously attributes the work to English artist Richard Cosway (1742-1821) with the incorrect assumption the Miss Burton was born in England.
Anna Burton George (1808-1855) was born in Richmond to Robert Burton and Anna Pitfield (Braddock/Braddick) Burton (later Brown). Her father, Robert Burton, was business partners with James Brown Sr. (1762-1841). After Robert Burton died, James Brown Sr. married Anna Pitifield Burton becoming this subject's step father. (See lot 2369 in this sale for a portrait of James Brown, Sr.).
Anna Burton later married John George, lot 2367 in this sale is a portrait of Major Byrd George, the father of John.

  • Provenance:

Descended through the Burton / George family of Richmond, VA. Probably from Anna Burton George (1808-1855) to her daughter Ellen Burton George Boykin (1845-1915) to her daughters (presumably "The Misses Boykin" as referenced by the exhibition catalogue).
Exhibited: "An Exhibition of Virginia Miniatures" The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, December 3, 1941 to January 5th, 1942. Lent by "The Misses Boykin".

  • Condition:

Very good overall condition with some moderate areas of surface soiling/discoloration to the painting mostly in the background and around the outer edges, the case with minor surface scratching and typical minor denting.
