ABNER DOUBLEDAY AND JOHN POPE
ABNER DOUBLEDAY (1819 - 1893) Union major general said to have fired Fort Sumter's first shot, and led the 1st Corps at Gettysburg after Reynold's death. Good association war-date signature ‘A. Doubleday' in black ink on a 5 in. sq. album page, adding the date ‘November 28, 1864' and his rank ‘Major General'. The verso of the page bears the signature of fellow major general JOHN POPE (1822 – 1892), who headed the Army of Virginia but was trounced by Lee and Jackson and relieved in favor of McClellan. He signs ‘Jno. Pope' in black ink, adding his rank ‘Maj Genl' and the date ‘Nov. 28 1864'. Shows very faint toning and negligible archival tape marks to the side of the page bearing Doubleday's signature, otherwise in fine condition. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Doubleday, with his facsimile signature beneath the portrait.
