AMERICAN, POSSIBLY VIRGINIA, "WANDERING FOOT" VARIATION APPLIQUE AND PIECED QUILT AND PILLOW CASES, SET OF THREE PIECES, hand-stitched; comprising a quilt completed in red and blue-green print fabrics on solid white ground, 16 on-point pattern blocks with grid and outline quilting, alternating with plain whole blocks having floret quilting, all encompassed by a sawtooth frame with outline quilting and a wide plain border with running plume vine and flower quilting, applied red print fabric binding, three-paneled plain backing with a later-applied fabric strip to one edge for hanging, one corner with faded printed design including backwards "SHEETING"; and a pair of pillowcases completed in the same red fabric and different green fabric on solid white, each having single pattern block and similar quilting designs, attached to a plain backing, open edges with applied decorative fringe. Mid 19th century. Quilt 83" x 87"; one pillowcase 24 1/2" x 17 1/2" without fringe trim, 5 1/2" LOA fringe.

  • Provenance:

    Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.

  • Condition:

    All red fabric with all-over typical losses to dark coloring in print; quilt otherwise in mostly good overall condition, top with toning and scattered stains, some fading to print fabrics along one corner and corresponding edge, one block center with mending to red fabric, binding with some fading and an area of loss, backing with some toning and stains, a few small holes; pillowcases otherwise in good to very good overall condition with some toning and stains, one case with tears to fringe at one corner.
