A handsome Victorian Eastlake side chair crafted in walnut, displaying the angular lines, incised detailing, and geometric ornamentation that define the celebrated Eastlake aesthetic of the late nineteenth century. The architectural crest rail is accented with carved linear decoration and surmounted by a turned finial, while the molded stiles and shaped supports exemplify the movement's emphasis on honest craftsmanship and restrained ornament. The chair has been attractively upholstered with coordinating plum-colored needlepoint panels featuring finely worked floral bouquets in shades of rose, cream, yellow, blue, and green. Matching decorative braid trim neatly frames both the backrest and generously padded seat, complementing the warm walnut frame. The front turned legs terminate in original-style porcelain casters, providing both mobility and period authenticity. Named after English designer Charles Locke Eastlake, the Eastlake movement influenced American furniture makers during the 1870s and 1880s, encouraging refined geometric forms and quality craftsmanship in contrast to the heavier Rococo Revival styles that preceded it. Today, Eastlake furniture remains highly sought after for its distinctive blend of architectural design and Victorian elegance. A charming and highly decorative example, equally suitable as an occasional chair, bedroom accent, or addition to a collection of Victorian furniture.

  • Literature: Comparable Eastlake seating forms are illustrated in Charles Locke Eastlake's "Hints on Household Taste" (1868) and in period American furniture catalogs produced by manufacturers including Herter Brothers and the Phoenix Furniture Company during the late nineteenth century.
  • Circa: Chair: Circa 1880–1890. Needlepoint upholstery: Later.
  • Condition: Overall good antique condition. Frame is structurally sound with scattered surface scratches, finish wear, minor nicks, and age-related abrasions consistent with use. Upholstery appears to be a later replacement and presents well with light expected wear. Porcelain casters are present. Examination under blacklight and by a qualified conservator is recommended for a complete condition assessment.
