One block with embroidered signature of "Kate. V. Neff / 1859" along edge adjacent to border. Dated 1859. 89 1/4" x 92".
Catalogue Note: The maker is identified as Catherine "Kate" Virginia Neff, who was born on October 19, 1839 in Shenandoah Co., VA to parents Daniel Glick Neff (1810-1876) and Elizabeth "Hannah" Garber (1816-1887). Kate would have been around 20 years old when she completed this quilt. She was recorded as living with her parents and six siblings on the 1860 U.S. Census for Mount Jackson, VA. On October 3rd of that year, Kate married Noah Webster Beery (1831-1921) in Quicksburg, VA, and the couple had seven children.
During the Civil War, her husband served in the Confederate army with Company G, 58th Virginia Militia. Some time before 1864, the family moved to Rockingham Co., living mainly in Linville and, then, in Bridgewater some time after the turn of the century.
