CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE SOLDIER TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPH IN BONE FRAME, identified as Private (later Sergeant) Joseph A. Bristow (Virginia, 1838-1903), a bust-length depiction in uniform housed in a diminutive carved bone frame. Circa 1861. 1 5/8" x 1 3/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: Joseph A. Bristow was born in Middlesex Co., Virginia in 1838 and enlisted in the Confederate army in July, 1861 where he became a sergeant in the 24th Virginia Cavalry Regiment and was captured near Petersburg, VA.
Later in his life Bristow represented Essex and Middlesex counties as a delegate to Virginia's Constitutional Convention in 1901-1902. The main purpose of the convention was to establish Jim Crow laws to take the right to vote away from Black and economically disadvantaged Virginians while trying to circumvent the 14th and 15th amendments.
During his Constitutional Convention campaign, he shared his opinions in the May 3, 1901 issue of the Southside Sentinel writing: "I have taken the oath of allegiance to support the constitution of the United States and do not propose to evade its requirements. Therefore I cannot vote to disenfranchise a Black man because he is Black. If elected I shall do my whole duty as sacredly to represent the humblest citizen of the commonwealth as that of her most honored official servants. As we are to have a new constitution may all good people hope and pray that it may be born in the light of the gospel of Christ and we and our children will never be ashamed of it."
The Jim Crow laws were approved at a 67 to 28 vote. Bristow was one of the 28 who opposed.
See Encyclopedia Virginia's article on Bristow for a more in-depth biography.
